You know the look. The deliberate slow licking of the grass. That peculiar movement of the forehead. The chatter. The drool.

All thoughts of trialing go out of your brain as you watch your intact male dog zone in on the grass blades, or the mats, or the dirt or whatever venue you are in…

Some skills, some help for you and your dog, and hopefully some solutions so you and your dog can sniff and dismiss before entering the trial ring or recalling away from the grass spot. Does your dog have ANTS IN THEIR PANTS when it comes to anything dealing with duration? How about barking at you in frustration or just plain quitting when you try to teach duration behaviors? It could be your process that isn’t offering clarity to your dog. You could be doing it all wrong.

In this webinar, I’ll explore how I view and teach the “concept” of holding a position. We’ll examine how this skill is easily transferred and serves as a cornerstone for a myriad of behaviors, both basic and even more advanced. Whether your goal is to ace obedience trials, participate in canine sports, or simply enjoy harmonious interactions with your furry companion, this webinar should equip you with the knowledge and tools to unlock your dog's full potential when it comes to getting rid of those ANTS IN THE PANTS.

We'll break down the process into manageable steps, providing practical strategies and insights to apply in your training sessions that are suitable for even baby puppies. In addition to a quick look at waits, stays, and dumbbell holds, we’ll examine how teaching a duration nose target and/or chin rest can be wonderful concept transfer tools.

Through a combination of key topics and real-life examples, you'll learn:

  1. What is meant by the CONCEPT OF DURATION?
  2. Starting duration – Are you sure you’re doing it correctly?
  3. The importance of a consistent RELEASE CUE
  4. Wait and Stays: what’s the difference
  5. Stepping Stone Behaviors: Duration Nose Targets & Chin Rests

Amy Cook, PhD - Management vs Training for Behavior Problems

Date: Thursday, May 9th, 2024
Time: 6pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).
Fee: $19.95 USD

Training for behavior problems is different from training basic obedience, in that it involves finding and motivating behaviors incompatible to your problem ones, plus changing the underlying emotions that can give rise to those problems in the first place! Let’s talk about those familiar ABCs, but let's break them down into A-B, and B-C!

Additionally, avoiding rehearsal of behavior issues is an important part of their resolution. Most people are working at stopping the display of undesirable behaviors while they're happening, but the best way to do this is to have a set of skills that are so well practiced that they are almost a script you can follow! Management is a skill unto itself, and has to be addressed separately from the specific behavior change needed long term.

In this webinar Dr. Cook will go over:

  • The structure and goals of behavior modification, and whether you need a new A, a new B, or a new C!
  • How management is crucial to reducing unwanted behaviors
  • Movement skills: Magnets and hand touch
  • Stationary skills: Perching and treasure hunt
  • Home skills: Mat skills, interruptions, and solo play

If you have a dog with a behavior issue, getting a handle on how management and training are different -- both in their goals and their execution -- is crucial to your success!

Aleks Woodroffe - The Power of Pressure: How to Use Handler Pressure as a Tool in Nosework

Date: Thursday, May 16th, 2024
Time: 3pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).
Fee: $19.95 USD

Working WITH our dogs to cover the search area and work the odor picture can be difficult and often results in the handler taking over. When we aren't aware of our own impact, we can cause our dogs to miss a hide, find extra hides in pooling odor, or add a lot of time to their search because we end up being "in the way".

This webinar will focus on WHAT is pressure and HOW it affects our dogs during their search. We will look at video examples, as well as discuss when pressure might be a bigger factor to our dog's success.

We will also look at how you can purposely use (or NOT use) pressure to help your dog stay working independently while subtly being able to cover your space. With awareness comes power... are you ready to hold this power?

Jennifer Henion - The Honor System - Amazing Off-Leash Honoring Skills for Retriever Sports

Date: Thursday, May 16th, 2024
Time: 6pm Pacific Time (Click here for time at FDSA (Pacific Time).
Fee: $19.95 USD

Retriever Hunt Tests and Field Trials require your dog to Honor another working team - off leash.

It can be VERY challenging, and is often the reason a lot of dogs fail, even if they did great on the rest of the test.

But we're about to make it a lot easier! All with positive training games!

The Honor System is a clear, step by step process to teach your dog what the Honor skill is, and how to get rewarded for doing it. You will learn how to set up each layer of skill and build up to honoring real working teams.

A big part of that is learning how to create a reward sequence that you can use in competition.

It's one thing to have your dog be steady for marks with gunfire and birds. It's a whole other thing to be steady watching another dog's marks PLUS watching that dog launch off the line to get them.

How does your dog know when the marks are for her or if she is honoring? How do we get our dog to understand what the honor is, what to expect and how she will get rewarded for this amazing feat of self control?

First we have to make it clear to you! And then you'll see how easy it can be to teach your dog.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • The individual parts of the Honoring skill
  • Start the process using crate games
  • Add a cue to make it clear
  • Fun games to GROW the skill with a second dog.
  • Transfer the skill to the field
  • How to create a Reward Sequence that you can extend to competition.

Why does this work?

Because the dog has two cues that tell her what is about to happen and what behaviors will earn the reward sequence. First there is a visual cue of another working team at the line. Second we have a verbal cue that cues the dog to be steady while the marks go off and while the working dog launches to retrieve. Our cues predicts what is about to happen and what behaviors to perform. It also predicts the reward sequence that will occur - making the behavior worth the effort!

Most failures occur in Honoring because the dog sees two major problems happening. 1) She 's being denied the retrieves, and 2) She's being denied the thrill of racing the other dog to the prize!

The Honor System fixes both problems by making each one into a cued behavior that has a guaranteed reward. Clear for you, clear for the dog and rewarding to both of you!

Got steadiness problems already, without even trying the honor? This webinar is also for you. We will outline the steps for any type of steadiness and show you how to grow that to almost any field distraction.
